LA COSTRUZIONE DELLA CHIESA DI S. GIACOMO A MEDJUGORJE

Per la costruzione della Chiesa di San Giacomo 'a Medjugorje ci sono voluti 35 anni di duro lavoro e tanti sacrifici. I lavoratori di questa sconosciuta zona rurale di quella che allora era la Jugoslavia non avevano idea che, solo qualche decennio più tardi, a seguito delle loro lunghe ore di lavoro sarebbe nata la seconda chiesa, più fotografata al mondo, seconda solo a San Pietro in Roma.

Infatti, i lavoratori non sapevano nemmeno perché avevano costruito la chiesa in modo incomprensibilmente grande, in quel momento quando la popolazione di Medjugorje era così piccola. Solo oltre 12 anni dopo che la chiesa fu consacrata, il 19 Gennaio 1969,  il Cielo ha rivelato il senso nascosto di tutto ciò, quando iniziarono le apparizioni della Vergine Maria il 24 giugno 1981. Poco dopo, la chiesa si è rivelata troppo piccola (!) per contenere l'afflusso di pellegrini, e così  nel 1989 è stata aggiunto un altare all'aperto dietro la chiesa.

La Chiesa di S. Giacomo è la seconda chiesa nella storia della parrocchia. La costruzione  della prima chiesa parrocchiale di Medjugorje è stata completata nel 1897, subito dopo la creazione della parrocchia nel 1892. Era una costruzione bella e spaziosa per il suo tempo. Tuttavia, costruita su un terreno instabile, ben presto avevano iniziato a svilupparsi fessure per poi farla affondare definitivamente: in relazione a ciò l'edificio fu distrutto con la dinamite. Solo le sue fondamenta sono state mantenute, oggi al centro di un parco tranquillo, pacifico e di solito sorprendentemente non visitato a meno di 100 metri dalla chiesa di San Giacomo  ....

Subito dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale, i parrocchiani cominciarono a pensare di costruire una nuova chiesa. La costruzione durò dal 1934 fino al 19 gennaio 1969, data che ha visto la consacrazione solenne della chiesa di San Giacomo.

Questa foto che mostra il progredire della costruzione è mostrata qui online per la prima volta. Medjugorje oggi è in grado di mostrarla a seguito della cooperazione per lacondivisione di foto che abbiamo stipulato con il prete inglese p. James Mulligan, documentarista di  Medjugorje ed ex giornalista,  il cui prossimo libro sui primi giorni di Medjugorje sarà pubblicato nel 2013. A seguto di questa  collaborazione con p. Mulligan, Medjugorje oggi prevede inoltre di essere in grado di fornire diverse ed importanti notizie tratte dal libro di prossima pubblicazione.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF ST. JAMES' CHURCH, MEDJUGORJE

St. James' Church in Medjugorje took 35 years of hard labor and many sacrifices to build. And the workers in this unknown rural area of what was then Yugoslavia had no idea that, only a few decades later, the focus of their long working hours would be the second-most photographed church in the world, second only to St. Peter's in Rome.

In fact, the workers did not even know why they built the church so incomprehensibly big, now when Medjugorje's population was so small. Only more than 12 years after the church was consecrated on January 19th 1969 did Heaven reveal the hidden meaning to this, when the Virgin Mary's apparitions began on June 24th 1981. Soon after, the church turned out to be too small (!) to contain the influx of pilgrims, and so an outdoor altar was added behind the church in 1989.

St. James' Church is the second church in the parish history. The construction of Medjugorje's first parish church was completed in 1897, soon after the parish was created in 1892. It was a spacious and beautiful construction for its time. However, built on unstable ground, it soon started to develop fissures to finally sink alltogether, upon which it was blown away with dynamite. Only its fundament was kept, today the centre of a quiet, peaceful and usually surprisingly un-visited park area less than 100 meters from St. James' Church. Immediately after the end of World War I, the parishioners began to think about building a new church. Construction lasted from 1934 until January 19, 1969 that saw the solemn consecration of St. James' Church.
